From what I can see, most papers exist because someone had to write a paper. The output is the point, not the truth. So you get a mountain of work that doesn't really say anything — written to be filed, cited a few times, and forgotten.

The real share, the work that actually moved things — transformers, the ideas everything is built on now — is small, and it mostly came out of labs and companies, not the journal grind. When the goal is to discover something true, you get something true. When the goal is to have written a paper, you get a paper.

真正起作用的那一小部分，真正推动了事情的东西——Transformer，还有如今一切赖以建立的那些 想法——其实很少，而且大多出自实验室和公司，不是期刊那套流水线。当目标是发现某个真相， 你就会得到真相；当目标是「写出过一篇论文」，你得到的就只是一篇论文。

I'm not against research. I'm against doing things for the sake of doing them. If a piece of work isn't honestly trying to be right, it's just a chore with a citation attached. I'd rather build something that works than write something that gets shelved.

我不反对研究。我反对的是为做而做。如果一份工作不是真心想把事情做对，那它不过是一件挂着 引用的杂活。比起写一份最后被束之高阁的东西，我更想做一个真能跑起来的东西。
