The Logarithm of Sovereignty

August 2026 2026

Nobody picks the personality they start with. It was decided by chemistry, in people you did not choose, before you were there to have an opinion. Everything after that is built. This is what I have worked out so far about doing the building.

A title is a promise

I spent a long time picking the name for this, which is strange, because I do not usually care what things are called. This one had to be right. A title is a promise: it tells you what the essay is about before you have read a line, and if it lies, everything after it is a lie too.

The candidates were all the same shape. The Logarithm of Power. Primacy. Ascendancy. Preeminence. Supremacy. They sound strong, they sound like things worth having, and they are all wrong for the same reason: they are ranks. A rank is a position you hold relative to other people. Power over someone. First among someone. Above someone. A rank is a trophy, a trophy only exists if there is an audience to see it, and a trophy can be taken away.

This essay says there is no winning, and I mean it. If the goal is to be smarter than every human combined, the goal moves forever and you never arrive, and that is not a tragedy, that is the point. The day you win is the day you stop. So a title that names a rank promises an ending this essay refuses to deliver. It would be a lie on the cover.

Sovereignty is not a rank. It is a condition. A condition is not something you win, it is something you maintain. A king is not sovereign because he beat other kings. He is sovereign because nothing on earth can compel him. That is the difference between being at the top of the pyramid and being outside the pyramid entirely. I do not want to be above the wind. I want to be the one adjusting the sails. The wind stays the wind. I stay me.

Everyone talks about the future as a race to control things: control the technology, control the market, control the people.

The real question is not who controls what. It is who is controlled by nothing.

This essay is about being owned, and the opposite of being owned is not master, it is sovereign. A master still needs slaves in order to be a master. A sovereign does not need anything.

Some people will read the title and think it is arrogant. Fine. Let them read the essay and find out it is the opposite. A boast says look what I have. This says I will not be owned. And it is not a goal, which matters, because I hate announced goals. It is a position, and it is the one I am already standing in. What follows is how I got here and what it costs to stay.

1Nothing here is objective

Personality is inherited. Somewhere in your parents a set of chemical reactions ran and settled into whatever you turned out to be, and the result was waiting for you when you arrived.

So everyone is born into a personality. You might like yours, you might not, and either way you had no say in it. You also have no basis for judging it, because you have never been anyone else. There is no control group.

Which leads to the thing I actually believe: everything any human has ever said is subjective. Nothing on this planet is objective. Everything arrives with bias, and that is a matter of fact rather than an opinion. People keep denying it anyway.

The clearest example is the question people love asking: are you an introvert or an extrovert? I find it close to meaningless.

There is no absolute answer, so asking for one is asking for a fiction. Everything on this earth is relative and very few things are definite. When you compare yourself to someone, you are comparing your idea of yourself against your idea of them. Both sides of that comparison are guesses.

2The goals you say out loud

If none of it can be measured from outside, the sensible response is to stop handing other people the ruler. Most of us do the opposite, and the place it shows up first is in how we talk about what we want.

The question I like least is "what are your goals?"

Everybody wants to be Elon Musk, because he is the richest man alive. Almost nobody asks what it cost him. In 2008 he came close to losing everything, and that part of the story does not travel with the ambition.

What bothers me is not ambition. It is that people announce goals they will not chase. If nothing goes in behind the sentence, the sentence is a hallucination: a confident output with nothing underneath it, which is exactly what a language model does when it is wrong.

I also think saying it out loud spends something. Announcing the goal hands you a portion of the feeling you were supposed to earn by reaching it, and once you have been paid you are less hungry. So mine stay inside. You will find out what they were by whether they happened.

3The pyramid

Who actually holds anything

One thing in all of this is not relative. Whether somebody can compel you is a fact, not an interpretation, and it is the only measurement I have found that survives the last two sections.

In ten years, whoever holds the technology can hold everyone else. That is not a prediction I enjoy making. ChatGPT already has billions of users, and a great many of them are dependent on it. I am one of them.

Dependence is the part that should worry you. Once you are dependent you are not really deciding any more. Change the guardrails, or slip an instruction in front of you, and you are downstream of a decision you never saw being made.

It is not only companies. Build something the size of Alibaba, and if the government is unhappy with you it can be over quickly. The same is true in the United States. I am not arguing for one system against another here. The point holds under both: if you are not high enough, or you do not hold something nobody dares touch, you are at someone else's discretion.

Most people are in exactly that position, and it has become normal enough that nobody uses a word for it. The people who are not in it are the ones at the top of the pyramid, the ones who control something, and who therefore have the right to speak.

So I want to be at the frontier of this. The instinctive way to finish that sentence is that everyone else is then under your control, and that is the wrong ambition, for the reason I gave at the start: a master still needs slaves in order to be a master, which makes him dependent too, just further up. What I want is the other thing. To build things good enough that people choose them, and to be far enough out of anyone's reach that nobody can decide for me what I am allowed to build.

Manufactured urgency

Every CEO is saying the same words right now: singularity, exponential, pivotal moment. Some of that is true. Some of it is that urgency sells. Fear makes people move quickly, and people who move quickly do not compare options.

The same thing happens one level down, in how people talk. Everyone has opinions about AI now, and about agents, delivered with the confidence of someone who has read the whole map. I use these tools every day and I am still not sure I understand them. What grates is not the enthusiasm, it is the certainty, which is usually the part that was borrowed.

The way I try to read all of it is from outside. I imagine an invisible person standing next to me, slightly taller than I am, and I ask what he would say about what I have just heard. He is usually less impressed than I am, and he is usually right.

4Two ways into a hard problem

Getting out of reach is not a mood you decide on. In practice it comes down to being able to work out things other people cannot, which means you need a way into a hard problem that does not depend on already knowing the answer.

When something is genuinely hard, I have two moves, and I use both.

Push it to both ends. Take the thing to positive infinity and assume the worst there. Take it to negative infinity and assume the worst there too. Whatever survives both ends is close to the truth. I do this with maths problems and I do it with decisions, and it works the same way in both.

Read the difficulty as training. Everyone should carry the belief that their life is theirs: not whoever is above them, not whoever is running things. Here is the argument that convinces me. Suppose you were designing the most capable human you could. Would you hand them everything? You would not. People are greedy and jealous and they waste what arrives free. You would put them through hell first, and then let them succeed. So when the family thing, the money thing, the grades thing, the injury arrives, I read it as the design working rather than as the design failing.

The first one is the only one that counts

One dog barking is about 50 decibels. Two dogs is not 100. It is about 53. Sound adds logarithmically: every doubling of the number of sources buys you roughly three more decibels, and no more.

The jump from nothing to one is the whole event. The next fifteen dogs, put together, buy less than a quarter of what the first one did.

Most things are shaped like this. Going from nothing to one is the whole event. Everything after it is incremental, and no matter how revolutionary an increment is, it cannot be the first one. Somebody has to start it, find the crux, find the actual gap. That is where the work is. The rest is polishing, and polishing is what most people spend their lives on because it is safer and it looks like progress.

5The brain is the project

All of that runs on one instrument, and it is the one piece of equipment I was issued rather than chose.

Your brain is built to be efficient at ordinary life. It is not built for this. Some people are born with something extra: Newton, Terence Tao. That is genetic, and I am not going to pretend I can compete with it.

But being born smart does not decide the outcome. Tao is one of the most gifted mathematicians alive and he is not a billionaire. Musk is not the highest-scoring person in any room he walks into, and it did not stop him. What separated them was effort and what they chose to point it at.

I did not start with anything. Not how the universe works, not which stock to pick, not how to get straight A stars, not how to program. Every one of those had to be put into me, and I can still name the month I learned most of them. So I would rather measure myself against what is still missing than against what is already in.

That is a choice about where to point the measurement, not a verdict. Different people define intelligence differently anyway, so comparing is mostly theatre: you are measuring against a ruler you drew yourself.

Compounding, and doing it early

Neuroplasticity is more flexible when you are young, which is the real reason parents push languages early. It only gets harder. What matters at that age is understanding that nothing arrives suddenly. You put in more effort at the start for less return, and less effort later for more. Almost nobody believes that while they are still standing in the flat part of it.

Load

负荷

I want my brain under load. Mental, not physical: the stimulation is the part I actually enjoy, and putting my body through it just hurts. When I have pushed my brain far enough that it aches, I get a sense of satisfaction that I have learned something. I know that is not how most of my peers work.

I also work better under pressure. A day with nothing on the list feels like a wasted life, and I mean that at full strength.

I cannot take rest days. My brain has not finished, and something that has not finished has not earned a rest.

The obvious question is why I apply this to myself and not to anyone else. People tell me to look for everyone's merits, and they are right, everyone has some. But doing that properly costs time I am not willing to spend, and I cannot sit through an inefficient conversation about something that matters with someone who is not on the same frequency. That is the least generous thing I believe, and I am not going to dress it up.

The argument with myself

There is a hatred in this, and it is worth being precise about where it points. It is not aimed at anyone else. It is aimed inward.

I do not accept excuses from myself, and the reason is that every excuse is true. That is exactly what makes them dangerous: each one is individually correct and collectively they are a life spent explaining. When people doubt me I get angry, and the training is not to express it. Controlling it is the repetition. Do it enough and the next one costs less, which is the only preparation I can think of for a future that is going to be far more complicated than this.

I think revenge is one of the strongest engines a person has, as long as it is pointed at your own limits instead of at a person. And there is no winning here, by construction: what I want is to be smarter than every human combined, which is impossible, so there is no finishing line and there was never going to be one.

The fire does not scare me. If my brain cannot take the pressure, then the pressure is exactly what it needs.

Discipline is just the second week

People look at swimming and eating properly and call it discipline. I see habit. It is the zero-to-one curve again: the first few days are genuinely hard, and after that it stops being a decision. Once it is a habit it gets easier every week, which is why the people watching think it takes willpower. The cost is all at the front.

6What I want, in numbers

I would draw this as a pyramid, so here it is as one. These are the numbers I actually carry in my head. I use RMB because I think it is a reasonable unit to measure in.

where I stop counting ¥1B net worth · ¥50M cash · ¥10M+ a year the bar I hold other people to ¥100M net worth · ¥10M cash everyone below that line
The numbers I carry, drawn honestly. The tiers narrow on purpose: that narrowing is the whole argument of the last two sections.

Tax

Tax reads as a tool aimed at the rich. In practice I think it binds hardest on the middle, because the people at the top know exactly how to structure around it, entirely legally. The constraint lands on whoever cannot afford the advice.

What money actually is

I do not have a strong urge for money right now, which surprises people given the numbers above. The honest question is how much is enough, and I think the answer is the point where you stop counting. When you no longer have to think about how much you have, you have enough for the rest of your life by definition.

Money is power, and power has a shape. The more of it you have, the fewer people are at your altitude. The pyramid narrows, that is the entire point of drawing it as one. There are people you can still talk to lower down, and at some stage you stop spending time there, and then it is quiet. I do not think that is tragic. I think it is the price, and it is worth knowing the price in advance.

Be hard to read

One thing I keep taking from what I read and listen to: be as opaque as you can manage. If people cannot read you, they cannot manipulate you and they cannot predict you, and they have to stay careful around you. Show different sides. Be unexpected. It is one of the better ways to survive the next few decades.

And on the inside of that, the line I actually use: you cannot control the wind, but you can adjust your sails. That is the whole of emotional control, and I think everybody should build the skill early.

Why I wrote this down

This was not a sudden impulse. It is roughly a year of thinking that has been following me around, and at some point the accumulation gets heavy enough that you have to put it somewhere. I started properly at the end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026: that was when I began to understand how the world actually works, and how much of me AI had already shaped.

Ten years from now, in 2036, I expect to be working like hell. Not because anyone is making me, not because anyone is watching, not because anyone is keeping score, and not because I want to be first at something. Because the only subject I have is me, and a sovereign does not abandon their territory.
