Five judgements I have stopped revisiting. I wrote them down separately across about eight months and only noticed afterwards that they are the same test asked five times: who actually did the thing, and who is merely standing near it.

I respect people who go deep on one thing and won't let themselves rest. They're the ones who keep pushing when stopping would be easier, who actually build. When I admire someone, it's almost always for that, not for what they own. The effort is the respectable part. The result is just what effort looks like later.

And I have no patience for the opposite. People who talk big and do nothing. People who brag, who claim to know something and then fold the second you actually ask them about it. Saying isn't doing. I trust what someone has built, never what they say they could build.

It shows up in small things too. I never liked generic awards: "best in this subject," handed out so widely that everyone goes home with one. I'd rather get nothing than get the same thing as everyone else. If it isn't the one nobody else got, it doesn't really mean anything to me.

From what I can see, most papers exist because someone had to write a paper. The output is the point, not the truth. So you get a mountain of work that doesn't really say anything. Written to be filed, cited a few times, and forgotten.

The real share is small. The work that actually moved things, transformers and the ideas everything is built on now, mostly came out of labs and companies, not the journal grind. When the goal is to discover something true, you get something true. When the goal is to have written a paper, you get a paper.

I'm not against research. I'm against doing things for the sake of doing them. If a piece of work isn't honestly trying to be right, it's just a chore with a citation attached. I'd rather build something that works than write something that gets shelved.

The people who talk most about wanting to be rich are, as far as I can tell, the ones who build the least.

I have watched people decide they want to be the richest person in the world and then do nothing at all. The money was the goal, so there was never a thing to build, only a result to want. Elon Musk did not set out to get rich. He set out to build things that mattered and the money arrived afterwards. The order is not a detail.

What the ones who did get good seem to share is not patience, which is what everybody claims afterwards. It is a willingness to take the harder version when an easier one was sitting right there. That is a less flattering trait and a more reliable one, and it is the only part of this I would bet on.

I'd rather hear someone who actually built the thing talk for two hours than read a tidy summary of it.

On taste, my test is simple: a site is good if I want to stay on it. Linear, Stripe, Claude, MiniMax. They pull you in and don't try too hard. Most AI-generated sites do the opposite. You can feel the sameness, and you leave. That feeling is most of why I cared about getting this one right.

And one idea I keep coming back to, from Andrej Karpathy: 10,000 hours. You drift, you procrastinate, you pick up a little of this and a little of that. But if you actually put the hours into one thing, you come out the other side an expert. I believe that more than I believe in talent.

I trade, but I want to be honest about what that means right now: mostly crypto, some equities, and mostly on paper, not real money.

What I do have is a view. The market is a casino, especially the secondary market. Most of what moves it is noise; something like ninety percent is sentiment, people following the crowd, and a thin slice is the few who actually know something. You never really know what it'll do next, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.

So the edge, if there is one, isn't a magic indicator. It's a sharp mind and first principles, actually understanding the thing instead of reacting to it. That's the real reason markets interest me at all. They're a clean, brutal test of whether your reasoning is right. The money is just the scoreboard.
